In this year’s special edition of Barcinno’s collaboration with 4YFN, we delve into an exclusive interview with the trailblazers and #4YFN24 award winners Qilimanjaro, a full-stack quantum computing powerhouse based in Barcelona.
Qilimanjaro’s quantum journey has recently been catapulted into the limelight thanks to its success as the 4YFN24 startup of the year. And it’s easy to see why. Read on for our interview with CEO Marta Estarellas, where we talk about the impact of winning the award, diversity and inclusion in deeptech, their plans to establish a quantum data center in Barcelona, and much more.
For those who don’t know, tell us all about Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech:
Qilimanjaro is a Barcelona-based full-stack quantum computing company established in 2019 by five founders: three renowned scientists, Pol Forn-Díaz, José Ignacio Latorre, and Artur García; a lifelong entrepreneur, Victor Canivell; and an expert in business and legal administration, Jordi Blasco.
Marta Estarellas, the Chief Executive Officer, leads a strong team of 45 quantum experts aiming to maximize current technology capabilities to provide practical quantum advantage in a shorter time frame by following a unique strategy. The company develops analog quantum computers, with high-quality superconducting flux qubits, to build app-specific quantum devices (QASIC), in a co-design approach that brings the design of the quantum chip closer to the use case. Its core product is an exclusive Quantum as a Service (QaaS) that allows remote access to distinctive quantum computing platforms and a boutique service for deployment and integration of in-premises quantum computers.
Congratulations on winning the 4YFN startup of the year! What do the recognition, cash prize, and new opportunities mean for your team and the future of Qilimanjaro?
We are thrilled with the results of winning the 4YFN Best Startup Award, as this event has significantly amplified our visibility. Drawing attention from potential clients, partners, and even investors, it has led us to many conversations and networking opportunities that we are sure will extend into the future.
As per the cash prize, we are in the process of refurbishing our new office and lab space in Barcelona, so we promised our team that we would use it to enhance the space to ensure their comfort. We’re aiming to create an environment that fosters relaxation and enjoyment alongside productivity (in the wish list, they have already requested a pool table).
Reflecting on your journey, what key factors do you believe contributed to your success?
There are many factors behind our achievements, but the cornerstone of our success lies in the remarkable team we’ve assembled. They work with dedication and passion, coupled with a genuine belief in our project, a scientific mindset, and boundless creativity. With the necessary vision, space, and resources, there are no obstacles they cannot surpass. They are the driving force behind each step forward we take as a company to reach our goals and beyond.
As an inspiring female CEO, are there any changes you hope to see in the tech ecosystem regarding diversity, inclusion, and opportunities for women and underrepresented groups?
There remains a significant journey ahead to enhance inclusivity for women and underrepresented groups across various domains, and leadership roles within the deep tech ecosystem are no exception. The prevalence of a majority of male stakeholders in this space can create a sense of alienation for some individuals, highlighting the importance of promoting inclusivity.
I hope that by fostering environments that embrace diversity and actively seek to include voices from all backgrounds, we will be able to cultivate a more welcoming and equitable ecosystem, which I’m sure will also serve as an ignition boost for technology innovation and progress.
Based on your experiences and any trends, what do you believe the future holds for quantum computing 4 years from now?
While quantum computing is still in its early years, this technology is growing really fast. Though forecasting its exact evolution remains challenging, I believe that four years from now, the technology will have completely changed, with the emergence of the first practical applications of quantum computing that deliver substantial value to several key industries, most likely in the scientific sector for the simulation of natural processes that are inherently quantum, from chemistry to materials science.
What are your future growth (or other) goals for Qilimanjaro this year and beyond? Did the pitching competition influence your perspective on your solution or strategy?
This year, Qilimanjaro will unveil the beta version of its core product, the Quantum-as-a-Service, to the public. Concurrently, we are embarking on the establishment of a unique quantum data center situated in the heart of Barcelona. This facility will serve as the hub for housing our diverse range of quantum solutions, all accessible through the cloud, as well as fostering our further developments.
As we move ahead, our focus remains on continual growth and innovation, supported by the fundraising of our Series A later this year. By advancing our technology, we aim to tackle increasingly complex challenges and broaden the applicability of our solutions across various industries. Our ultimate goal is to deliver tangible value through tailored quantum solutions that address real-world problems, positioning Qilimanjaro as a pioneering force in the quantum computing landscape.
In this regard, the pitch competition has allowed us to connect and get known by several investors who are interested in supporting Qilimanjaro’s journey towards the peak of quantum advantage.
Finally, for emerging deeptech or other startups, could you share any advice learned from your journey and participation in the 4YFN Awards?
Absolutely go for it! Participating in one of the major startup events in Barcelona is a great opportunity to immerse yourself and showcase your company’s potential. Being also part of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) ecosystem, surrounded by a diverse array of stakeholders ranging from policymakers to investors, offers unparalleled exposure and networking possibilities.
In addition, I would like to highlight and publicly thank the seamless organization of the event, with great professionals who will ensure your focus remains on delivering a compelling pitch, allowing you to really enjoy the experience. My biggest advice is to have fun – I encourage all startups to embrace this chance to shine and enjoy the ride!
