It’s that time of year again. The holidays are behind us, work is picking back up and Wayra is sending out the call for the global accelerator’s 2014 class of innovative new startups. Telefonica’s international startup accelerator announced yesterday the opening of a new global call for proposals in order to find new projects in the area of Internet and mobile technologies.
Startups around the world have until February 23 to apply to accelerator programs in Barcelona, Madrid, London, and Prague in Europe, as well as Bogota, Buenos Aires and Caracas in South America. This year’s call for startups is especially interested in projects involving the Future of Web, Big Data and Internet of Things (IoT) especially those ventures connected to applications and improvements for Smart Cities.
Barcelona and Madrid are seeking 10 new projects a piece to run the gauntlet between now and April when the new class moves in and begins their acceleration process. For the first time in almost three years, Gary Stewart will not be heading up Wayra Spain as he recently took up the director role of Wayra London and Wayra UnLtd.
Wayra is on a mission to promote innovation and scope out new talent in the fields of Internet and new information and communication technologies (ICT) in Latin America and Europe. Through its global acceleration model they continue to support entrepreneurs and provide them with the technological tools, qualified mentors, the most cutting-edge technological facilities and the financing they need to accelerate their growth.
Fourteen Wayra programs are currently running in twelve countries (Argentina , Brazil, Chile, Colombia , Czech Republic , Spain, Germany , Mexico , Peru , United Kingdom and Venezuela ). Since it’s inception, Wayra accelerators have received more than 20,000 proposals to create new digital businesses, which makes it the single largest platform for talent acquisition in the world of ICT. Currently, their academies Bogota, Mexico City , Lima, Buenos Aires , Madrid , Barcelona , London , Sao Paulo, Dublin , Munich and Prague have over 315 portfolio companies.
