MASTEAM talks – Enabling IPv6 over LPWAN technologies

The Master’s degree in Applied Telecommunications and Engineering Management (MASTEAM, https://eetac.upc.edu/en/study/masters-degrees/masteam) organizes a weekly series of activities (talks, technical visits, discussion pannels) that complement the academic activities with real-world experiences from companies, research centres and institutions in the main topics of the master: Internet of Things. Smart Cities, 5G mobile communications, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Radio (SDR), cloud computing, augmented reality and audiovisual services, among others.

Title: Enabling IPv6 over LPWAN technologies

Abstract: Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technologies, such as LoRaWAN, Sigfox or NB-IoT, have recently emerged as a promising networking solution for IoT applications. LPWAN technologies achieve a long range (up to tens of kilometers), while allowing multiyear operation for battery-enabled devices such as sensors. This characteristic is fundamental to offer reduced IoT infrastructure deployment and management cost, as few LPWAN base stations can cover the devices of a whole city. 4 billion LPWAN devices are envisaged by 2025, and the IETF has recently focused on providing IPv6 support over LPWAN technologies for connecting IoT devices to the Internet. However, LPWAN technologies are also severely constrained in terms of bit rate, message rate, and frame payload size, therefore IPv6 over LPWAN is even more challenging than previous similar efforts such as 6LoWPAN or 6Lo. This talk overviews the functionality currently being standardized at the IETF to support IPv6 over LPWAN.

Bio: Dr. Carles Gómez is Associate Professor at Escola d’Enginyeria de Telecomunicació i Aeroespacial de Castelldefels (EETAC) of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). He is a member of the Network Engineering Department , and of the Wireless Networks Group (WNG).
