Barcelona is an international city that now boasts one of Europe’s best ports for super yachts, something that has made the city attractive for investment in the maritime sector. We recently wrote about a crowded yacht rental market in Spain, talking with the founders of Nautal and Yanpy.
However, there’s a new company in town and it’s taking the yacht rental experience to the next level. The company offers their clients the ability to tour a variety of yachts in VR and customize the journey through their private platform, currently under development.
Based in One Ocean, Marina Port Vell, charterdart (spelled with a small c) is focused on yachts above 24 meters, which is different from other startups in the city. The company hopes to highlight Barcelona not only as a starting point before the islands, but a premium charter destination.
A big and a small market
The company caters to demanding and highly affluent clientele, as the price to rent one of their yachts can range from a few thousand a day to several hundred thousand EUR a week.
However, Hardman explains that it’s a big market within its niche:
“Only four percent of people that can afford to rent a super yacht has ever done it, so our plan is to start capturing the remaining 96 percent. We think technology might be the hook.”
Hardman used to be a Captain on a mega yacht, and has spent the last years in Monaco managing yacht-related assets for a wealthy international family.
“Barcelona was the perfect location for charterdart to establish its brand, a city that already attracts wealthy people from around the World that appreciate its abundance of culture, fine dining, architecture, golf, nightlife and more,” says Hardman and adds that it’s also much easier for the business to attract top tech talent here because of the lifestyle.
Bring the tech millionaires to Barcelona
“We would love to highlight the best that Barcelona has to offer, digitally, and become a gateway for astute UHNWI into this magnificent city that can be enjoyed nearly year round due to the favorable climate.”
Additionally, the Founder also has his eyes on the growing number of business events and congresses that are hosted in Barcelona, such as the Mobile World Congress. Companies routinely rent large yachts for similar events in Miami and the South of France, but the phenomenon is relatively new to Barcelona.
Want to grow from Barcelona
The way charterdart plans to expand is through a more seamless interface of curated experiences that highlight the best each destination has to offer, in advance.
“Our goal is not to eliminate the broker, but rather streamline the process flow. For example, through our service you can send guest preferences straight to the crew and other details about your trip that usually create bottlenecks. This allows us to cater to clients wishing to book on a last minute basis.”
charterdart will mainly be attracting customers from the US and China, but also from Europe. The service is available in English and Mandarin Chinese.
Right now they’re six team members with offices in the OneOcean in Port Vell, but they’re looking to grow bigger fast with the right partnerships in place.
