Quantum Computers: Why, What, How and When – Toni Juan (Microsoft Quantum Lab)

November 14, 2018 @ 17:30 - 18:30

Free

The Master’s degree in Applied Telecommunications and Engineering Management (MASTEAM) organizes a weekly series of activities (talks, technical visits, discussion pannels) that complement the academic activities with real-world experiences from companies, research centres and institutions in the main topics of the master: Internet of Things. Smart Cities, 5G mobile communications, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Radio (SDR), cloud computing, augmented reality and audiovisual services, among others.

This week’s activity will be a talk from Toni Juan (CEO and founder of Metempsy, Principal Hardware Engineer at Microsoft and Associate Professor at UPC).

Title: Quantum Computers: Why, What, How and When

Abstract: Exponential improvements in the computing capability as well as reduced cost per compute unit have transform our world and fuelled our technological progress. Unfortunately, the main source of that exponential improvement is reaching an end and we need new computing technologies and paradigms if we want to sustain that rate of performance increase. One of the technologies being explored for
future computing systems is Quantum Computing. Are you interested in what are the main characteristics and components of a quantum
computer and what can expect from them? Come to this talk and we will have a dynamic conversation about it.

Bio: Toni is the CEO and founder of Metempsy, a company devoted to the definition of what the future of computing will look like. Toni is also a Principal Hardware Engineer at Microsoft and an Associate Professor at UPC. He has spent the majority of his career designing high-performance microprocessors for DEC, Intel, and now Microsoft, that have been at the core of the most powerful supercomputers in the planet. He is currently part of the Quantum Computing team at Microsoft.
