November 20, 2019 @ 17:30 - 18:30

Free

The EETAC Master’s degrees in Applied Telecom. and Engineering Management (MASTEAM) and Advanced Telecommunications Technologies (MATT) organize a weekly series of activities (talks, technical visits, discussion pannels) that complement the academic activities with real-world experiences from companies, research centres and institutions in the main topics of the master: Internet of Things, Smart Cities, 5G mobile communications, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Radio (SDR), cloud computing, augmented reality and audiovisual services, among others.

Speaker: José Miguel Pulido (Volta Networks)

Title: “5G networks + edge computing: opportunities for network software engineers”

Abstract: 5G + Edge computing are new incoming technologies that together are going to enable a new range of IOT applications such as autonomous driving, smart cities and AR gaming. Telecom operators need to rearchitect their networks to accommodate these technologies and to be able to support these services. That includes the creation of thousands of edge data centers with compute and network transport capacities in a cost effective manner, as well as software-based control and virtualization to dynamically implement services for both corporate and residential customers. Therefore, “software is eating the world” is really dawning into the networking industry and networking professionals of the future are going to require expertise in software and cloud as well as in network technologies.

Bio: José Miguel Pulido is VP of Engineering at Volta Networks. He has an Eng. D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, an M.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of California, Irvine, and a Telecommunications degree by UPC, Barcelona Tech. JM was a la Caixa fellow, a Balsells fellow and holds a portfolio of patents in networking technologies.

Volta Networks is a Boston-based startup with engineering offices in Barcelona building a disaggregated router that virtualizes and scales the routing control plane by putting it into the cloud, uses automation to accelerate new network services and reduces cost by an order of magnitude as compared to legacy routers.
