Greedy writers prefer Riak by Arcadio Pando and David Guijarro (Telefónica I+D)

There are writers that have the blank page syndrome, they have problems to start writing.  The Niji (aka Awazza) logging system is not one of those writers, it produces many log lines per second and we use them to compute statistics for our users. Standard SQL solutions and even some of the NoSQL solutions cannot cope with that amount of activity.  We selected Riak to solve that verbose writer problem, it can write fast as hell and reliably.  We tell you how the story went.

Riak is a distributed NoSQL key-value data store that offers high availability, fault tolerance, operational simplicity, and scalability

David Guijarro

Algorithms, complexity and programming languages are his passion. He has a strong background on theoretical computer science together with a large experience in developing real time applications for the financial markets. He knows how they work and no, he doesn’t know why stock market goes up or down, you will have to find out that for yourselves!

Since coming to TID (2011) he has been involved in innovation tracks in the CDN, Awa and now Niji. He doesn’t have strong preferences for any programming language but he hates some of them.

Arcadio Pando

I’ve been a software developer for more than 15 years, covering a wide range of technologies on server side and following the trends from object oriented to dynamic languages and from relational to NoSQL databases.

My daily job is to make robust, high performance and maintainable pieces of software, sometimes I get it.”
